Terminology

This page defines the key terms used across the Brumwickle platform and its documentation. Understanding this vocabulary helps when reading the Overview, Functions, and Platform Details pages.

These definitions reflect how terms are used within the Brumwickle context. Some terms have broader meanings in other systems or in general usage; the definitions below apply specifically to how they function within Brumwickle's information-organisation approach.

Classification

The process of assigning an information entry to a defined category based on its properties. In Brumwickle, classification is applied automatically when new entries arrive and can be reviewed or adjusted by users through the interface. Classification is the foundational operation that makes structured review possible.

Category

A named group into which information entries are classified. Categories are defined at the account level and reflect the organisational structure that each user or team applies to their information. A single entry belongs to one primary category, though it may be linked to others through the relationship-mapping function.

Entry

The base unit of information within the Brumwickle system. An entry is a single record — a discrete piece of information that has been classified, stored, and made available for review. Entries may contain structured fields, free text, or associated reference data depending on how they were created and classified.

Record view

The detailed view of a single information entry. The record view presents all available fields and metadata for an entry, along with any associated relationships. It is the most granular level of the interface, accessed from a category list or a retrieval result.

Retrieval

The process of locating a specific entry or set of entries using the search and filter tools provided by the system. Retrieval differs from browsing in that it targets a known requirement rather than exploring the classification structure. The guided retrieval function supports both structured filters and natural-language queries.

Relationship mapping

A function that identifies and displays connections between entries based on shared properties, references, or proximity in time. Relationship maps allow users to understand how a given entry relates to the broader set of information available, without requiring manual cross-referencing.

Summary layer

The highest-level view in the Brumwickle interface, which aggregates information across all categories and presents an overview of the distribution, volume, and recency of entries. The summary layer is read-only and descriptive; it does not generate recommendations or projections.

Account configuration

The set of settings that define how the Brumwickle system behaves for a particular user or team. This includes category definitions, classification rules, access permissions, and interface preferences. Account configuration is set up during the onboarding process and can be updated by authorised users through the settings area.

Access request

A formal enquiry submitted to the Brumwickle support team requesting access to the platform interface. Access requests are reviewed individually and are not automatically approved. The team may ask for additional information before making a decision. Submitting a request does not commit either party to any arrangement.

Orientation

A brief guided introduction to the Brumwickle interface provided to new users following access approval. Orientation materials explain how to navigate the main areas of the interface, how to use the retrieval and classification functions, and how to contact support if difficulties arise. Orientation is not a training programme and does not cover all possible uses of the system.

AI-enabled

A general descriptor indicating that the system uses artificial intelligence techniques — in Brumwickle's case, primarily for classification and guided retrieval — to support its core functions. "AI-enabled" is a descriptive term only; it does not imply any specific algorithm, model architecture, or performance level. The system's AI components assist human review rather than replace it.

Filter

A constraint applied to a list of entries to narrow the results to those matching specified criteria. Filters can be applied at the category level or the retrieval level and may reference any available field within an entry's record. Multiple filters can be combined and saved as named views for reuse.

Is a term missing from this list?

If you encounter terminology in the interface or on other pages that is not explained here, send a message to the support team. We are happy to clarify and may add the term to a future update of this page.
